In general, when someone mentions web design, I think, “hmmm… sounds complicated.” I do not know why I think this – I feel I have above average technology skills and I can usually create things with ease. But it still sounds difficult. I enjoyed finally having the opportunity to explore Web Design Principles and what it really means. I took so much pride when I finally figured out how to code a web page – such an accomplishment!
At first thought, I was thinking that the multimedia design project might be just something basic that we needed to learn to do, but I was wrong! The Multimedia Design Project made me grow. I had to incorporate every skill that I have learned and dust off tools that I had learned about but then forgot about… (I know we all have some things like that!). I poured hours into that project. I’m glad I did. I am so proud of it; more importantly, my students love it!
When I implemented the WebQuest, I did not know what to expect. I teach high schoolers… would they even humor me and try it? Is it too juvenile? Is it appealing? I mean, I think it is excellent and all students will love it – but “I’m old” according to my students – that means that I do not always know “what’s in” to them. But they loved it! They loved being able to decide what they were going to learn about (from the options I gave them of course). I loved being able to pre-select websites for them to research ... that way they could give Wikipedia a break! I was also able to pre-load and embed videos. That is always a plus, because I have two links to them, so hopefully I can always find them now!
Learning about and implementing multimedia and web design principles and strategies improved my work. I now consider color, symmetry and lines when I design items for my students and for myself. I try to look at things from a different perspective to make certain that they are visually appealing and functional. I feel that this allowed for a culmination of many of the things I have learned over the past year of classes. Everything can together and worked together!
