Standard 1.4 Diffusion of Innovations & Change
Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools. (PSC 1.4/ISTE 1d)
Artifact: Action Plan
Reflection:
By developing and analyzing the SWOT Analysis, I was able to create an Action Plan for DCHS. I looked and the data for the SWOT analysis and targeted areas of weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. I then determined a plan to facilitate the improvement of the areas by creating goals for the categories of skilled teachers, instructional change, student focused, diversity considerations and school related. I determined the strategies needed to achieve these goals, the timeline to begin and complete these goals by, any associated costs of these goals and who would be responsible for implementation achievement of these goals.
By researching survey and demographic data, I was able to create and recommend strategies for successful technology use in my Action Plan for DCHS. I was able to identify areas for improvement from the SWOT analysis and then use this information to create goals. Through this process I was also able to implement strategies for change and find cost effective ways to achieve these goals.
I was able to recommend various ways to manage the change process by identifying who would be in charge of each goal and who would be involved with each goal. I also recommended ideas for professional learning for teachers and ways to increase student achievement by providing equitable Internet access. Through these initiatives, I was about to initiate the process for change.
Through the process of creating the Action Plan for DCHS, I effectively learned how to analyze a SWOT Analysis. I was able to take the findings from the SWOT and design and implement meaningful and needed change at DCHS. I learned to categorize these goals in a meaningful way that facilitates the process of change, evaluates the method of change and align success indicator to measure goal achievement.
I would change the strategies for achieving equitable access in Internet accessibility under the category “Diversity Considerations” because I believe that I need to research a more thorough process. I feel that achieving this goal is critical in relation to overall student improvement with technology use and I need to conduct a more thorough investigation by interviewing other systems with similar situations and possibly develop another plan of action in case Windstream is not willing to create a low-income option for families that would qualify for this need.
The research of the SWOT analysis allowed me to develop meaningful strategies for change. These strategies will greatly impact DCHS as they identify step by step the process necessary to achieve these goals. The impact from achieving these goals can be measured through the technology use defined in the success indicators educators, by tracking student log records in our new LMS, by measuring and comparing the increase of technology access in low SES homes (current compared to future use after goal is accomplished), by the creation and implementation of a new technology plan aligned with DCSS’ Vision and by the increase in technology based professional learning opportunities for teachers.
