Artifact: ITEC 7430 Diversity Blog Post
Reflection:
The blog I wrote in ITEC 7430 titled, ‘Diversity, Cultural Understanding and Global Awareness demonstrates my abilities to support diverse learning needs. I researched “classroom diversity, diversity, global awareness, differentiation” just to get a different perspective or even a supportive perspective to that of my own. I enjoyed writing this blog because I reflected upon all of my own experiences and selected one that demonstrated my own realization of global awareness as a child.
In this blog, I describe how I model and facilitate the diverse needs of my students. I discuss differentiating for a student with Autism by providing much-needed Web 2.0 Tools to meet his needs in the classroom. I describe the need for global awareness amongst today’s students; even more so in a foreign language classroom. I describe methods I use to model and facilitate digital tools to enhance cultural understanding in the Spanish Classroom (Skype, GoogleEarth, Twitter, etc.). Not only because I teach a foreign language, but also because it is needed now more than ever, I try to facilitate and enhance my students’ cultural understanding to increase global awareness. They may have the “world in their hands (cellphones), but they are still self-centered. It is important to change this viewpoint to create a more cultural understanding group of individuals.
Through this experience, I learned to really delve into what “diversity” means and apply it to the daily process in education. I also learned that there are still many ways I can increase student performance and cultural understanding by identifying and facilitating the diverse needs of my students. I know it would be nearly impossible to meet every need of all 35 students in each class, but now I am implementing strategies and developing ways to meet more needs of my students.
This blog was entertaining and overall easy to write. Going forward I would like to add a video component in the blog to make it more authentic and meaningful. By adding a video component, it would also the diverse needs of the reader.
The impact of this Blog is difficult to measure. Even though the blog is informative and research-based, I did not receive peer feedback to be able to measure the learning impact. The impact of student learning in my classroom that I have achieved by modeling and facilitating cultural understanding, global awareness and by supporting student needs is measureable. Once the student that I mentioned in the blog was providing technology assistance in the classroom, his grades began to improve steadily. By the end of the semester he had an A.
