Reflection:
I had the opportunity to assist my peer to use technology more effectively in her classroom. During my coaching sessions, I worked with my colleague to identify what she and her students needed, to troubleshoot ideas to help her accomplish learning outcomes and to offer support and feedback once the strategies and resources I suggested had been implemented. I also showed her how to use the technologies and Web 2.0 Tools that I recommended.
At first I was both excited and intimidated to implement the strategies that I had been learning. I thought about my delivery for making constructive criticism and how to make certain I could identify areas for improvement. At first she was intimidated to incorporate the use of Schoology that I had suggested after my first observation because she did not know how to use the LMS properly. I helped her by troubleshooting her questions and showing her how to use the LMS more efficiently. In other session after another observation, I showed her how to upload videos to YouTube for her students to utilize as well. The last session was for reflection. We discussed how helping her troubleshoot various technologies improved her students’ performance and excitement over their project that they had created using these same tools.
One thing that I learned through this experience was to learn how to interact with my colleagues without sounding condescending and by being sincere. It is not easy to give criticism or for a teacher to let another teacher come in the classroom to pick apart a lesson. I feel that I may have been too direct in the first session and I regret that. When I have this opportunity again, I will remember this experience and the interaction skills and techniques that I learned to help me communicate more efficiently.
This experience greatly impacted student learning and faculty development. I wen on to having workshops to help my peers troubleshoot their technology needs. The students in this class greatly enjoyed using the Web 2.0 tools to make their projects and be creative. Impact can be assessed in the implementation of the use of more technology in the classroom and also by the quality and creativity in these projects.
