Standard 1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
I created the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis in ITEC 7410 to identify what we are doing well in at DCHS, which areas need improvement and/or are threats to our school’s advancement as a positive and inclusive learning environment. I used information collected from interviewing school administration and the technology committee as well as demographic and achievement data to conduct this analysis.
Through the creation of this artifact, I was able to facilitate, develop, implement, communicate and evaluate a technology-infused strategic plan. I facilitated the design and development of this plan by identifying areas of strength, weakness, opportunity, and threats by breaking them down into the easy to read format of the SWOT analysis template. I used data I had collected to develop a plan of action for the identified SWOTs that directly related to the Eight Essential Conditions.
I was able to facilitate the implementation of this plan by bringing awareness of areas of weakness and opportunities for improvement. By communicating with school leaders and the technology team, I was also able to determine and communicate strategies for successful technology use and ideas for implementation of these strategies.
By breaking down the Eight Essential Conditions in this format, I was able to facilitate the evaluation of the need for equitable access, gender gap closures in technology participation and better technology training for teachers.
Through conducting the SWOT Analysis, I gained a clearer understanding of what we do well and areas for improvement in relation to technology at DCHS. I was able to better identify the determiners by the ease of format of the analysis. I learned much about the reality of our school and the opportunities for us to do better and facilitate change in a more cohesive manner.
If I could change anything about the analysis, I would have included interviews and feedback from faculty and my colleagues. Interviewing my colleagues would provide more insight on the needs of our teachers to incorporate technology use. It would also provide insight through testimony of specific student activity in classrooms. I think it would have also be helpful to use more student data (test data, etc.) to determine what other needs should be listed and accessed accordingly.
The work that I did to create and develop the SWOT Analysis allows anyone to get a bird’s eye view of the current reality of technology at DCHS. We now have a plan to take advantage of missed opportunities and pre-empt threats that prevent us from successful implementation. We now have a better understanding on areas to improve faculty development and have identified areas for improvement in student achievement. The impact of the SWOT Analysis can be assessed by the effective implementation of professional feedback. Through observations and collaborations within departments or Wednesday Workshops we can assess our improvement of incorporating better uses of technology. We can assess the impact of student achievement by comparing and analyzing the quality of work in their portfolios or student samples.
