Standard 3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: ITEC 7445 Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project
Reflection:
The Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project exemplifies my abilities to meet the needs of my school, school system and technologies infrastructure in an accurate, suitable and compatible way. I selected to do this project to facilitate DCHS and DCSS in the LMS adoption process. Our school system was ready for a uniform LMS that would meet the needs of students, teachers, and parents, system-wide. I piloted the LMS Schoology when we began using it at DCHS. I used it to create blended lessons and meet the learning needs of my students that were not being met in a traditional classroom setting.
I met with the technology team to discuss overall system and school goals. I selected other Learning Management Systems and compare it with the one I was piloting. I evaluated resources, costs and accessibility. I identified which tools, resources and programs that were already in place and collaborated with technology liaisons at Schoology to determine compatibility with these programs. I spoke with our technology team to determine best suitability for a system of our size and various LMS.
I then compiled all of this information into a presentation that explained which LMS I thought we should select. I began with our system vision and mission and then described all of the ins and outs of Schooloy – the cost, why it meets our needs and how it will meet our future needs by facilitating the 1:1 iPad/student ratio for DCSS. I presented this information to my administration. We collaborated about my selection and they decided that it would be the selection for our school.
Through this process I learned about all of the details that needed to be considered to implement a LMS. I learned about budgets, platform compatibilities, and effective and equitable usage. If I could change one thing, I would have made this a team effort to explore other LMS and get more details regarding other LMS – something that I did explore, but could have been explored more had I had more man-power.
This artifact greatly impacted technology use at the student, teacher and system level. We adopted Schoology as our LMS and are currently using this LMS to facilitate the unrolling of our 1:1 iPad Initiative. There are now constant opportunities to help my colleagues learn to implement and incorporate Schoology seamlessly into the curriculum and to maximize all of the features that it has to offer.
