Artifact: Shared Vision and Rationale
Reflection:
By creating the Shared Vision and Rationale in ITEC 7410 I was able to facilitate the development and implementation of a shared vision at Dawson County High School for the use of technology in teaching, learning, ad leadership. I began this process by interviewing administration and our system Instructional Technologist. I questioned how technology was being implemented, how it is currently serving or not serving our student and what steps are in place going forward. I then developed a vision for Dawson County High School and Dawson County Schools by using the information I collected from these interviews and the state’s website regarding student demographics and achievement abilities.
This particular artifact is directly aligned with Standard 1.1 because it is a Shared Vision for my school. By conducting these interviews and using the information from these interviews to diagnose the needs of our school, I was able to facilitate the development and implementation of a technology vision for our school.
By using student demographic data to identify the percentage of students with low socioeconomic backgrounds, I was able to facilitate the development of this vision. This information also allowed me to determine what needed to happen to implement this plan to meet student needs and allow this vision to be successful.
I was able to collaborate with the system Instructional Technologist to determine how we will meet the needs of our students regarding technology access outside of the classroom when nearly half of our population cannot afford this new commodity.
I knew that we had a high low socioeconomic population at Dawson County Schools. However, I did not realize that these families currently do not have low-income options for Internet access available to them. I also did not know that Dawson County School Systems is in negotiation to try to convince the sole Internet provider for the county to offer low-income options via a waiver system.
Through my research of alternative options for Internet access, my school is currently looking into providing a WiFi service for families that qualify via services like Kajeet.
By experiencing this process I was able to learn much about the current reality of technology at DCSS. If I could change one thing, I would have also interviewed our superintendent to better understand the system’s vision and plan to help these families. I would discuss with him what source of funding we would be able to use to continually fund these important endeavors. I would also liked to have included the Data Team and the IT support for our system to identify how we will troubleshoot device management and voucher management and filters.
My Shared Vision and Rationale for DCHS was able to identify the current reality of technology use at DCHS and the need for technology access of DCSS students. Through implementation of the voucher system for Internet access and the implementation of the 1:1 iPad Initiative, the impact of student learning will be able to be assessed. By offering new assistive devices to students who need them, students will be able to achieve more and meet educational demands that they could not without such devices. By identifying the roles of stakeholders, we are ensuring that this process will continue and a positive impact will be achieved. This impact can be measured in the higher test scores, better participation from prepared students and ultimately students would be better employees with access to resources and be able to find and maintain community provided jobs.
