Standard 4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: ITEC 7445 Copyright Assignment
Reflection:
The Copyright Presentation I created in ITEC 7445 best demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. To create this presentation, I researched Copyright and Fair Use Law. I then selected an area in which I most often see violations from my students: Google Images. Students believe if they search it, find it, etc. it is theirs - period. I created this presentation to model appropriate behavior and procedures when wanting to use an online image. I provided examples within the presentation to model safe, healthy and ethical uses of digital technologies.
At the end of the presentation, I provided the audience scenarios to determine what they learned from the presentation. They had to determine if the actions within each scenario obeyed copyright law or infringed upon it. I originally created this presentation as a reminder for my peers. However, I have used this presentation more with my students! This artifact demonstrates my mastery of Standard 4.2 because now I am able to effectively and accurately model ad facilitate the safe, healthy and ethical uses of digital technologies. I carefully select an image that I want to use from online resources to make certain that I do not violate any copyright laws. I also cite everything I use and encourage my students to do so as well. I have been surprised how much my students do not understand or consider copyright law and have been happy to help them out with this important aspect of using digital technology.
By creating this artifact, I learned valuable information on how to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal ad ethical uses of digital information and technologies. I was able to refresh what I knew and add upon it as new laws are being created as new technologies are born. To make the presentation more interesting, I would incorporate a game before the presentation to give it a hook. That way, the hook would not be, ‘Let’s discuss Copyright!” By adding a game at the beginning, the audience would want to find out more as opposed to wanting to leave or not listen.
This artifact greatly impacted faculty development and student learning. It offered faculty the information to know how to treat Internet images and also to brush up on Copyright Law. It impacted my students because they began to think about images that used for projects, presentations, etc. in the classroom environment. Students started submitting Works Cited and began asking me about appropriate use of images for projects, etc. after the presentation was conducted.
