Standard 2.8 Data Analysis
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. (ISTE 2h)
Artifact: ITEC 7305 Data Overview
Reflection:
After identifying and collecting data sources from DCSS, I created a Data Overview. This Data overview allowed me to collect, analyze and interpret Data. I compared our most recent test data for all standardized tests with the results from the previous three years (sometimes more) and analyzed the trends within this data. I then compared how we rank to other schools in our RESA.
I showed the Assistant Principal of Curriculum my findings and modeled how I used Web 2.0 Tools to analyze the data and create visual charts and graphs to help others easily identify data trends. I was then able to communicate my findings during our Wednesday Workshops to the rest of the faculty. I also facilitated the reflection process amongst departments about how we use this data and if there were more efficient ways that we could interpret and implement appropriate interventions from these findings.
I learned that many teachers do care about the data; even if they sometimes feel it is a waste of time to discuss other subjects. Through this process, I was able to help reveal how improving student achievement overall or in other subjects would improve student achievement in other subjects as well. I would change the fact that I presented to the entire faculty first. I feel that the process would have been more effective had I presented to Department Chairs first and then broken down into “teams”. I did receive positive feedback; but I feel that I could have had more feedback in a smaller setting for the presentation and interpretation of the data that was discussed.
By conducting a Data Analysis for DCSS, I was able to impact school improvement, faculty development and student learning. By compiling this information into a colorful and easy to interpret visual presentation using Web 2.0 Tools and other digital resources, I was able to make the process more efficient and easier for all. We now have small data groups, as well as a data team that use the strategies that I modeled and interpret data in a more meaningful way. This has also helped students at DCHS that need remediation because we have been able to implement more effective strategies to help these students.
